The Story Behind the Beak: The Unofficial History of Sebastian the Ibis 🪶

If you have spent any time in Coral Gables or attended a game at the “U,” you know that Sebastian the Ibis is one of the most recognizable and energetic mascots in college sports.

Whether he is leading the team onto the field through the smoke or executing his signature spell-out, Sebastian is a staple of our local culture. But the story of how a marsh bird became the symbol of Miami resilience is full of fun history and a few surprising twists!


Here are a few lesser-known facts about how Sebastian came to be:

1. The Folklore of the Ibis
According to Everglades folklore, the white ibis holds a special place in South Florida ecology. Instinctively, the ibis is known as the last bird to seek shelter before a hurricane strikes and the very first bird to reappear after the storm clears. Because of that courage and resilience, the University’s student body chose The Ibis as the name for the school yearbook way back in 1926.
2. Before the Bird, There Was a Boxer
Believe it or not, the school’s first official on-field mascot was not a bird at all! In 1949, UM debuted a 65-pound white boxer dog named Hurricane I, who wore a custom orange-and-green blanket to football games. While the dog was a fan favorite, the canine tradition did not last long.
3. A $30 DIY Project Became a Legend
In 1957, Norman Whitten (then Director of the Student Union) designed an ibis entry for a homecoming event. The following year, student John Stormont built a homemade mascot suit using armolite insulation for the head, white terrycloth for feathers, and burlap for the toes. The entire suit took three weeks to make and cost roughly $30.


4. The Coral Gables Connection
The mascot was initially nicknamed “Icky” by students. However, he was soon renamed Sebastian after San Sebastian Hall.

5. The Graduation Secret
To this day, the identities of the students who play Sebastian are kept strictly confidential throughout their college years. The secret is only revealed on graduation day when the student performers walk across the stage wearing Sebastian’s giant orange mascot feet under their gowns.
